Pipe sizing is a crucial aspect of steam system design.  **Oversized pipework means: ** - Pipes, valves, fittings, etc. will be more expensive than necessary.  - Higher installation costs will be incurred, including support work and insulation. - For steam pipes, a greater volume of condensate will be formed due to the greater heat loss. This means that more steam trapping will be required. **Undersized pipework means: ** - Lower pressure might be available at the point of use, which may hinder equipment performance. • There is a risk of steam starvation due to an excessive pressure drop.  - There is a greater risk of erosion, water hammer and noise due to the inherent increase in steam velocity.    ![siFramo Installation Example_1](https://www.engineeric.co.za/hubfs/siFramo%20Installation%20Example_1.jpg "siFramo Installation Example_1") Steam Line Surveys and Assessments   High energy prices and global competition dictate a need to reduce energy waste and improve system efficiencies  whenever possible. Steam, aside from being one of the costliest utilities, is an essential component of  product quality in many processing industries. A major contributor to waste and inefficiency is leaks; both to atmosphere and through valves and steam traps. Improvements to the steam system may include insulating steam  and condensate return lines, stopping any steam leaks, and maintaining steam traps. Experts have also said that as  much as 20% of the steam generated at the central boiler is lost to leaking or failed steam traps. The purpose of a successful steam trap inspection programme should be to repair any faulty steam traps and leaks that can affect safety, to reduce energy waste and promote sustainability as well as product quality.   Service Level Contracts   Production delays aggravated by poor service planning are both costly and frustrating.
